Effect of Different Pinching Times and Photoperiodic Treatments on the Lateral Shoot Growth and Flowering of Liatris spicata cv . Floristan Violet for Cut Flower Cultivation

Abstract
This study was carried out to clarify the effect of different pinching times and photoperiodic treatments on the lateral shoot growth and flowering of Liatris spicata cv. Floristan Violet for cut flower cultivation.
This study was extended further to investigate relationship between the activity of endogenous growth substances and lateral shoot growth or development.
1. Lateral shoots were tended to initiated and elongated much longer when plants were pinched in the earlier growth stage (i.e., stem elongated below 10§¯) than did later.
2. Plants grown under long photoperiod conditions had long stems and well grown shoots after pinching. Whereas, those grown under the short photoperiod had short stems with few lateral shoots and accelerated bulbil formation.
3. Lateral shoot or bulbil formation might be associated with endogenous inhibitor level of stems.
